Water Sports in the hautes alpes

Water the lifeblood of the Hautes-Alpes.

The Buech, Durance and other rivers are just waiting to be explored during your stay. Some are more suited to quiet contemplation, while others can be tackled by the more adventurous white water enthusiasts.

In the buech valley the river passes through woods and pine forests. It then becomes the meouge and tumbles in waterfalls. Natural waterslides abound, as do large rocks, some of which make good diving boards and others ideal picnic sites. After the waterfall, hollows in the same rock make natural swimming pools; a truly spectacular sight.

Canoeing and canyoning are available when the rivers are not to low (as occasionally happens in the Summer months).

At Embrun there is a kite surf and wind surfing lake, which is recommended by local riders as one of the best in the Alps.

Cycling

The Hautes-Alpes department is a natural playground for all cyclists. Mountain bikers come here every year to tackle the mountain tracks, whilst road cyclists enjoy the challenge of the high mountain passes, which helped to build the reputation of the tour de France.

The mountain pass roads are now occasionally set aside for those who dream of the challenge of mountain cycling, but you may also choose to take roads witch overhang the Durance river or Serre Poncon lake, or those which run through the meouge gorges. Other roads head up to the mountain pastures, following the curves of the hill, crossing forests, meadows and lavender fields.
